Selenium is an essential trace mineral found in Brazil nuts, seafood, meat and grains. Its content in plant foods depends heavily on the selenium level of the soil they were grown in.
It is incorporated into selenoproteins, which have genuine antioxidant activity, and it plays a role in thyroid hormone metabolism and immune function.

The Narrow Window Worth Knowing About
Selenium is unusual among minerals in that the gap between an adequate intake and an excessive one is relatively small.
Long-term excessive intake can cause selenosis, with symptoms including hair loss, brittle nails, digestive problems and a garlic-like breath odour. Just a few Brazil nuts can supply a full day's requirement.
That is not a reason for alarm at ordinary supplement amounts. It is a reason not to stack several selenium-containing products without checking totals.
